Bear Trap Canyon Fishing Report Red Hot
Bear Trap is on fire. Cooler temps in August have kept this fishery on top of its game. We haven't had a bad day in the 'trap all
season and September should continue to stay red hot. The limitted fishing pressure keeps these trout dumb and hungry. We
have seen a lot of accidents in the Kitchen Sink this year and some people are really getting mauled in the class V rapid so
please make sure you are boating with someone with years and years of high level white water experience before attempting this
float on your own.

Lower Madison River Fishing Report Very Good
The Lower has been fishing well lately as several cold fronts have helped to bring water temperatures down. Fish are keyed in on
crayfish but are also looking for dead drifted streamers along with your favorite attractor bead head nymph. Fishing pressure for
most of the summer has been very light since the water temps are normally too warm down here. When hot weather settles in the
fishing will go back to poor, but as long as the water temps are in the 60s you can catch some good fishing. Cloudy days can be
awesome. As we roll into September this fishery will become more consistent and will be a go to location.

Upper Madison River Fishing Report Very Good
The Upper Madison continues to fish very well. We have had a few tough days sneak their way into the lineup, but wind has been
the culprit more than anything else. Dry fly fishing is now and option on the upper and how much the fish are looking up varies
from day to day. Hopper fishing has finally turned on and some days have been outstanding while other days just OK fishing the
big dries. Nymph fishing continues to be very productive with nice size trout still making their way to the net with frequency. We
continue to fish a big/small combo with a zonker/sculpin/stone up high and an attractor nymph below. Most of the Bozeman and
Dillon guides are now on other rivers leaving just the West and Ennis guides (and us!) so the river is lightly pressured and should
remain that way for the remainder of the season with great flows everywhere else

A school bus size boulder fell on Ennis Dam early yesterday morning. Flows have raised dramatically in order to drop the level of Ennis Lake and allow repair work. As of yesterday afternoon the river was dirty but should stabilize and fish fine soon. Regular high water tactics should work fine once the river clears.

After taking a beating on the Yellowstone we headed to the Lower Madison with our fingers crossed that mother nature wasn't going to be a long winded as she was the day before. The weather was exceptional when we arrived however the Montana Fish Wildife and Parks was doing their semi annual fish counts and shocking from Warm Springs to Cherry Creek. We put in below them at the Cannaday Bridge "Death Ramp" and floated to Greycliffs. The fishing started out a bit slow but made a change once the sun came out. Fishing was very good between 11am and 3 pm. The fishing shut down in the afternoon as a new cold front moved in and pushed some gusty conditions onto the river. The midge activity is starting to slow down compared to what it was a couple of weeks ago. I would expect to see baetis starting to hatch in the next couple of weeks. We had a wonderful day without the wind and plenty of healthy browns and bows came to the net.

2 - GOOD on 02/18/2008
Midges are hatching in good numbers starting around 9 am and lasting until around 3 pm. Sunny skies will limit the number of fish on the surface, but with some cloud cover you can hunt for rising fish and have some decent dry fly action. Nymphing is very good with small nymphs, San Juan Worms and Egg patterns. Wind has also been a limiting factor for dry fly action, but you can still catch plenty of fish in the deeper pockets on nymphs.
(12/30/2008 at 02:29 PM by Biggie)
|
2 - GOOD on 02/15/2008
The midge activity is getting started and with calm overcast skies look to get in some early season dry fly action. Nymphing has been very productive as well but the river below the Bear Trap Canyon is starting to see midges hatching in enough numbers that they are clustering. Look for the dry action to improve in the coming weeks. Wind will be the deciding factor when heading to the lower so keep your fingers crossed that it's calm when you head out.

2 - GOOD on 11/15/2007
Low flows on the Upper river are making for some tough floating but the wade fishing has been great. The area around Raynold's Pass and Three Dollar bridge are providing some easier than normal wade fishing and the fish are feeding very well. The midge hatches are pretty strong and a few Baetis were still hatching today while I was on the river. There were a few pockets that held a few rising fish but we did not make an effort to get them on top. Nymphing with black and red midge larvae trailed behind a Chartruese Egg produced good numbers of rainbows and a couple of browns between the two anglers I had on the river with me. The fish are taking up the same areas and we caught several fish from each pocket that we fished. The wind was blowing very hard in Ennis so we were forced to the upper reaches of the river to take shelter from the wind. It was dead calm all day on the very upper end of the river. If you are thinking about fishing the River below Ennis Lake you will have to wait a week or so due to the lake turning over and the clarity is less than 6 inches as of Thursday Morning. We originally were going to fish below the Ennis Dam, which has been very good recently but the river and lake were both very dirty. I would expect it to take at least a week to clear.

1 - EXCELLENT on 11/09/2007
The Upper Madison has produced some very nice brown trout in the Varney Bridge to 8 Mile Ford stretch this week. The river is very low on the upper end and floating it is a bit of a ride right now. Rafts are the best craft for getting down the river, it is a rocky ride in a drift boat. Fish are moving out of Ennis lake and stripping streamers has produced some very nice fish. The Lower river has been enfuego below the Ennis Dam. If you are looking for dry fly action this is the place to be in Montana right now. Midge hatches are extremely strong and there have been a lot of fish up on the surface looking for them. Griffith's Gnats trailed with Big Uglies or Heathens has been very productive later in the week. Nymphing below the dam has been very good as well with The old Steak and Eggs approach.

2 - GOOD on 11/02/2007
The Madison is a great fall fishery and for the streamer addict it can produce some great results. The very upper reaches of the river inside of Yellowstone Park has one more week until it closes. The fishing has been good inside the park with all of the fish migrating out of Hebgen Lake into the river. The Brown trout are starting to move into spawning grounds and the rainbows are right behind them for an easy meal. Many anglers head to the park to fish the Brown trout run but for me the big highlight of fall fishing on the Madison inside the park is catching the large lake dwelling rainbows that follow the browns out of the lake. The area around Three dollar bridge is still producing some dry fly action with Baetis and Midges coming of when conditions are perfect. The river below Lyons is prime for streamer action and most anglers are fishing streamers in the deeper holes and against the few banks that have enough water to hold fish. Flows are low so floating is very challenging on the Madison.

2 - GOOD on 10/25/2007
Upper River from Hebgen lake to Ennis Lake: Flows are low at 681 @ Kirby Ranch. Floating is a challenge with the low flows, especially between Mac and Varney and from 8 Mile to Town. Dry fly action has been slow with a few fish coming up to Baetis patterns and dry dropper rigs. The best action for dry fly anglers in the area near three dollar bridge where ants and beetles along with baetis and midges will still bring fish up to the surface, especiall whey conditions are right. Streamer fishing is starting to pickup as the brown trout get more aggressive and ready themsleves for the spawning activity in the comming month.

Descriptions
1. The Madison River is located in Southwestern Montana and is known amongst
fly anglers as the fifty mile riffle because the lack of water diversity.
Fly anglers will find a strait wide river which is like a, well, fifty
mile riffle. The Madison is easy to wade and has a healthy population of
large rainbow, brown, cuttbow, and cutthroat trout.

Comment: "Ever Think your fly was to Big! This fish was quite a quandry for both myself and the fisheries biologist in the Bozeman Office. We both thought it was a giant sculping but it turns out is is acutally a native fish called a "Stone Cat" They are a native fish to the Missouri River drainage and I have since seen several more in the Madison.
