1 - EXCELLENT on 07/20/2009
The state stocked on Wed (15th) so there were plenty of fish. A friend and I caught so many fish that we got tired of catching them and started trying different flies just to see what worked. I caught about half on a hares ear with Zebra Midge dropper and the other half on a Grey Ghost type fly with an epoxy head and flashy eye. I would rip it through the current over or near where I thought the fish were holding and in some cases three or four fish at a time would go for it!! (07/20/2009 at 10:45 AM by highpockets)

Fish are biting throughout the day (tailwater) and especially first thing in the morning.

A two-fly rig (Pheasant with 16 Zebra midge dropper) fished under an indicator worked best for me with a olive/chartreuse bugger a close second. (07/08/2009 at 12:25 PM by highpockets)

1. The Elk River Tailwater fishery begins below Tims Ford Dam near Famous Lynchburg, Tennessee; home to Jack Daniels Whiskey. This is a remarkable fishery and is known to produce large fish on very small flies. Primarily a midge fishery, the Elk is gin clear and painfully cold. It is a float river. Access is limited to a short public area but only a few yards beyond the public area is where the big fish begin. This river should be fished with a friend. Park one car at a take out point and another at the Tim's Ford Dam. BEWARE ! This river is dangerous! Water discharges do not always follow schedule but are based on power demand. In the summer the river can rise 10 feet or more in the gorges and hypothermia can be a problem even in insulated waders, but the rewards can be great with a 26 inch fish on a 22 midge. If the water starts rising, get out immediately. Several people are lost each year due to drowning. Always wear a flotation device.... 2. The Elk River is located near Winchester Tennessee. Fly fishing is good in the Elk River as it supports both rainbow and brown trout for more than 15 miles downstream of the dam. Fly anglers can gain access via Route 50 from Lynchburg or Winchester. Another access point is Route 121. The river is stocked yearly with both rainbow and brown trout from both the Dale Hollow and Shiloh hatcheries.
