Trip reports

3 - FAIR on 01/18/2010
The rain on Sunday caused the river to rise and get off color once again. The New Canton area would be the best area to target. At the warm water discharge down river from the ramp you will find water temps in the mid 50's. Crayfish and streamers will produce quality fish. 3 - FAIR on 01/10/2010
The ramp in Scottsville is still covered in mud.Talked to a VDGIF employee there and he hopes to have it clean as soon as it thaws.
They have started clearing the debris away from the bridge at Hardware. Hopefully they will have all the repairs done by the spring season.
The river is in great shape and should fish well. Not numbers of fish but some bigger smallmouth will be found.Continue to fish crayfish and bait fish patterns slow on a sink tip line. Get the crayfish on the bottom. Mid day and early afternnon will be the best times to hit the water. (01/10/2010 at 01:38 PM by Bugfisher)

3 - FAIR on 01/03/2010
River is droping to more fishable conditions. The warm water discharge area at Bremo would be the best bet. The Scottsville ramp is covered in mud (2-3 feet). (01/03/2010 at 03:24 PM by Bugfisher)

The two plus feet of snow we recieved has shut down the smallmouth fishing.I wish each one a very Merry Christmas! (12/20/2009 at 07:34 PM by Bugfisher)

Looks like since I,ve been providing reports the river has been blown out! Well it blown out this week also. So stay home and clean your fly line and go through the fly boxes to see what needs replacing or tyed. Don't forget to sharpen the hooks. That way you will be ready when the conditions improve. The James is done for the rest of the year. But do come back and check often as I will keep you posted if and when it stabilizes. (12/05/2009 at 04:29 PM by Bugfisher)

3 - FAIR on 11/28/2009
The James has recovered enough to be fishable again. Use sink tip lines and heavy flies. Craw fish, Tube, and Grub patterns fished slow and on the bottom may draw some intrest from some nice smallmouth.Fish the warmer parts of the day for best results. (11/28/2009 at 06:26 PM by Bugfisher)

4 - POOR on 11/22/2009
The river is still blown out ! Give it a couple more weeks to return to more favorable conditions. Happy Thanksgiving to all ! (11/22/2009 at 08:31 AM by Bugfisher)

4 - POOR on 11/15/2009
With over five inches of rain in the area the river will be unfishable for 7 to 10 days.Check the spring creek and tailwater reports and go trout fishing (11/15/2009 at 07:05 AM by Bugfisher)

3 - FAIR on 11/07/2009
As the river dropped from last weeks high and muddy conditions-it has left the banks and ramps layered in mud.Use caution when entering and exiting the river as the mud is slick.Go with heavy sink tips with a 6-8-foot florocarbon leader.Crayfish and schulpin patterns fished on the bottom should produce a fish or two at this time of year.It looks like seasonal tempertures this upcoming week-get out and enjoy the river! (11/07/2009 at 06:58 PM by Bugfisher)

3 - FAIR on 11/03/2009
Hey All-Just getting started here and want to post reports so you'll know whats happening in my part of the world. Sorry but the James is high and off color. The smallmouth prior to this had moved to the deeper holes and slots. Crayfish and schulpin patterns had been producing fish. Fish them deep ans slow! (11/03/2009 at 01:34 PM by Bugfisher)

Descriptions

1. James River offers excellent smallmouth bass fly fishing. The James is characterized by runs, boulder dropoffs, and good bank structure that hides smallies. There are large numbers of large smallmouth (14-18 inches) that are often taken on the fly rod.
