Trip reports
1 - EXCELLENT on 07/20/2009
Dry fly action all day! Although the fish were also biting many nymphs, they were biting dries throughout the day, so thats what I chose to use.

1 - EXCELLENT on 07/17/2009
Nymph fishing the early morning is the way to go. Try fishing a double nymph rig with a large attractor pattern in front and small mayfly and midge patterns behind. The hot fly today was a size 20 black RS2. We also had success on Caddis dry flies in the morning!! The afternoons are starting to really heat up with caddis hatches, and the lunkers under the bridge are taking caddis dries aggressively.

|
3 - FAIR on 06/29/2009
The fishing has picked up a little bit. I noticed a few fish rising to some caddis and mayflies, and had some luck using a elk hair caddis dry fly. The only success I had with dry flies was sight fishing for the very few rising fish in the river. Nymphing was also a bit slow, but caught some on a San Juan worm and caddis nymph rig.

|
4 - POOR on 06/15/2009
The river is still flowing high for the middle of June. The gates to get to the SWA are still closed as of today, so be prepared for the hike. The fishing was slow and the trout were only eager to bite a few streamers. I recommend fishing the early morning because of the daily afternoon thunderstorms.

1 - EXCELLENT on 01/18/2009
Fishing was excellent in the afternoon slow in the morning due to ice jams. Water clarity was the best i have seen in the last couple of years

|
3 - FAIR on 01/16/2009
Fishing has been slow in the morning due to ice. Later on in the day i have seen the fish a little more active due to the warmer temps.

2 - GOOD on 10/29/2008
Great streamer fishing with good dry fly fishing during BWO hatches.

|
3 - FAIR on 08/08/2008
Heavy inconsistent wind, bugs BAD!, bank fishing is horrible with mosquitoes and deerflies, fewer fish than years past. D.O.W., C.S.U & U.S.F&W. bioligists have taken ther toll this year. High water for an extended period allowed them to remove more fish than ever this year.

1 - EXCELLENT on 08/02/2008
Awsome dry fly fishing during morning and evening. Caddis emergers working great throughout the day.
(08/02/2008 at 11:59 AM by adamreder)
|
2 - GOOD on 03/26/2008
Fishing has been good through Mid-morning. Run-off has been minimal so far. That could quickly change with a few warm days.

Descriptions
1. The Yampa River originates high above the northwest Colorado town of
Yampa. There are diverse fly fishing opportunities along the 150 miles of
river as it flows west into the Green River. The stretch from Stillwater
Reservoir to Yampa has tailwaters, meadow sections, and tumbling freestone
waters that offer the fly angler a good chance at a grand slam.

"The Yampa has been pretty good at the Tail Water, but too crowded. Through town runoff has gotten serious. This will continue at least till June. Meanwhile the tributaries will be the best bet or "Ice off" at some of the lakes. SFZ"

"Flows are finally coming down and the fishing has greatly improved. It is now July 11th and conditions will continue to improve. Yellow Sallies in the A.M. have been productive. Go deeper as the day wears on."
